Pavement Marking Removal
LINE MARKING
REMOVAL
Before you can paint new lines, the old ones need to go. The Airport Guy operates multiple removal machines — grinding, hydroblasting, scarifying — across parking lots, roads, airports, and industrial facilities throughout Northern Alberta. We have two of most machines so large projects get done without delays.

What is line marking removal?
WHEN OLD LINES NEED TO GO

Line marking removal is the process of eliminating existing road, floor, or pavement markings. This becomes necessary when markings fade due to wear and tear, or when changes in layout or usage require new configurations. It is essential for maintaining safety, legal compliance, and visual clarity across all types of paved surfaces.

From airports and car parks to industrial facilities and playgrounds, proper removal ensures that areas remain safe, compliant with applicable standards, and visually clear. Painting over old markings is not an acceptable solution — ghost lines create confusion and can be a safety and compliance issue.

Safety first

Faded, incorrect, or overlapping markings create confusion for drivers, pedestrians, and workers. Proper removal and reapplication maintains clear, accurate guidance and prevents accidents.

Legal compliance

Line markings must meet visibility and accuracy standards. Outdated or ghost markings can create liability issues. Proper removal ensures regulatory compliance before new markings are applied.

Layout changes

Facilities change. New traffic patterns, additional stalls, accessibility requirements, or repurposed zones all require removal of existing markings before new ones can be accurately applied.

Airport specialist

Runway markings, taxiway guidance lines, and apron zones require removal and reapplication to meet strict aviation safety standards. This is our specialty — we bring the same precision to your parking lot.

How we remove markings
REMOVAL METHODS

We operate multiple machines and use the method best suited to your surface, marking type, and project requirements. For most parking lot and road applications we run two machines simultaneously for faster completion.

Most Common

Grinding / Scarifying

Diamond grinding removes the top layer of pavement containing the marking. Highly effective on asphalt and concrete, leaves a clean surface ready for repainting. Our preferred method for most parking lot and road applications.

Airport Grade

High-Pressure Water Jetting

Hydroblasting uses high-pressure water streams to remove markings with minimal surface damage. Preferred for airport aprons and sensitive surfaces where grinding would remove too much material. Environmentally friendly — no chemicals, no airborne particles.

Abrasive Blasting

High-speed abrasive material removes stubborn markings from tough surfaces. Effective on thermoplastic and epoxy markings that resist other methods. Used where grinding or water jetting alone is insufficient.

Chemical Removal

Specialized chemicals dissolve or soften paint for easier removal. Used where mechanical methods may damage delicate surfaces. Requires careful handling and environmental controls.

Thermal Lance

Intense heat burns off line markings. Effective on specific surface types and marking materials. Traditional method that works well in combination with other techniques for complete removal.
